Admit it. You’ve been waiting for another movie about Robin Hood. Not exactly? Well, surely you’ve wanted to see Russell Crowe beat up people with objects other than phones for the sake of entertainment, right?

Taking Woodstock Taking Woodstock
By RT @ 5:07 PM :: 1993 Views :: 97 Comments :: Article Rating :: Drama, Comedy

If there's one thing we Americans enjoy, it's celebrating the anniversary of a legendary music festival featuring 500,000 muddy hippies frolicking about in a field in upstate New York.Well, we really like tractor pulls and corn dogs too, but I'll save those for another review.
In 1994, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of Woodstock with another muddy concert pairing some of the original festival bands and some not-so-hippy groups like Green Day, Cypress Hill and Nine Inch Nails.
In 1999, we remembered the trippy, flower children happy fest once again with another concert in the Catskills region of New York, this time with insanely overpriced food and water, backed-up portable toilets and violent, arson-minded crowds. I moshed in my friend's living room during sets by Limp Bizkit, Rage Against the Machine and Metallica while watching on pay-per-view (we somehow only shorted out his 12-inch Cerwin Vega woofers once that night).
As we mark the 40th anniversary of the most famous music festival of all time, we get "Taking Woodstock," a comedy-drama film centered around the event which has become synonymous with peace, love, drugs and nudity.
After seeing the movie, I found myself looking back on the living room mosh pit scene with fondness. Anniversaries are supposed to get more memorable as the years go by, but I had a lot more fun at my friend's house 10 years ago than I did at a recent "Taking Woodstock" screening.
It's not a bad film, per se, but I'm not really sure what the point of it is -- other than an attempt to cash in on the nostalgia floating through the air like a haze of pungent smoke wafting through the rolling grasslands of upstate New York, anyway. Neither a documentary (a la 1970's three-hour "Woodstock" film, which combined live performances with a steady dose of far-out philosophical insight provided by some of the 500,000 "freaks" at the concert) nor a straight up coming-of-age picture (think "Garden State" minus the quirky but likable characters played by Zach Braff and Natalie Portman), "Taking Woodstock" is rather foggy on its purpose.
Considering the time period and the characters involved, maybe that's the point.
But being quite interested in the musical and cultural importance of Woodstock, I wanted to like this movie a lot more than I ended up liking it.
This is the story of Woodstock from the viewpoint of Elliot Teichberg (played by Demetri Martin), a young Jewish man living with his parents in White Lake, N.Y., helping them care for their past-its-prime motel. As the head of the local chamber of commerce with a lodging connection, he helps see that the Woodstock organizers get what they need to host their music festival near his hometown, a dead-end kind of place for a bright young man to be spending his years.
The film attempts to show that by essentially welcoming the world into his backyard, Elliot discovers a version of himself he had been repressing in order to appease his strict, conservative parents. It's kind of like 2000's "Almost Famous," the partly factual account of Rolling Stone editor Cameron Crowe's early behind-the-scenes experiences with rock bands and groupies in the 1970s, without a lot of the "fun" factor that film seemed to embrace.
Sadly, there's not all that much "fun" to be had in "Taking Woodstock."
The first half of the film centers on the organization of the festival, which is somewhat interesting from the logistical standpoint of organizing an event on this massive of a scale, but without this being a documentary account of the festival, is rather worthless in this context.
The second half focuses on Elliot's transition from being a sheltered "boy next door" type to one corrupted by girls, guys, rock 'n' roll -- and of course, psychedelic drugs.
Director Ang Lee does a nice enough job working his magic behind the lens -- as evidenced in the portrayal of a trippy scene in the back of a Volkswagen Bus -- but the story seems weak and poorly thought-out for the most part.
True to its subject, "Taking Woodstock," takes a very mellow approach throughout. Usually, it's too mellow to elicit much of a reaction from the viewer. There are some humorous moments, but without the aid of some "special" brownies (as served up by a cross-dressing security guard to Elliot's parents in a fun, lighthearted scene on their porch during the festival), the laugh-out-loud moments are few and far between. Don't expect "Dazed and Confused" types of stoner jokes here -- they're nowhere to be found.
Only at one point did I truly feel the giddy, carefree sense of stoned bliss I imagine many in attendance 40 years ago might have felt: With Canned Heat's bouncy "Going Up the Country" playing, we see Woodstockers -- in various stages of undress -- sliding down a muddy hill into a pool of brown water.
"Now THAT is Woodstock," I thought to myself.
If only there were more moments like this in "Taking Woodstock," we would certainly have a more fitting tribute to the 40th anniversary of the largest gathering of longhairs in history.
If you want a glimpse at what Woodstock was really like -- or were there but can't quite remember what it was like -- you'd probably be better off watching the original "Woodstock."
Or just bake some of those brownies.
Joel Sensenig is news editor of the Review Times. He believes his days of moshing in living rooms to commemorate hippie festival anniversaries are a thing of the past.

I was nine and unable to go to the original Woodstock. But, since then I've made it to Woodstock '94 25th Anniversary and Westfest - 40th Anniversary Woodstock celebration in San Francisco... and I was really looking forward to this movie. I was disappointed. It did seem kind of pointless. But - I'll be at whatver they do for a 50th Anniversary - God willing.

Woodstock broke the pop culture mould; that’s a given. Three days of peace and music at Max Yasgur’s farm was like nothing that ever came before or after, for that matter. It rocked the world and defined a generation. That’s no overstatement. For some it was the height of peace and love era, the standard by which future generations were entertained and social moods measured. For others it was a cash cow that paved the way for the commercialisation of the flower power generation. Altamont came later but that’s another, darker story.

We dropped our towels on the beach and waded into the water. Mom was little ahead of me and stopped and turned around before the water level reached her belly button. I stopped in front of her and just stared. Mom grinned and reached for me, she pulled me close and we kissed, not the kiss of a son and his mother, but a deep passionate kiss, the type a 13 year old imagines he will someday experience with his first lover.

Woodstock Music & Art Fair (informally, Woodstock or The Woodstock Festival) was a music festival, billed as "An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music", held at Max Yasgur's 600-acre (2.4 km²; 240 ha, 0.94 mi²) dairy farm near the hamlet of White Lake in the town of Bethel, New York, from August 15 to August 18, 1969. Bethel, in Sullivan County, is 43 miles (69 km) southwest of the town of Woodstock, New York, in adjoining Ulster County.

Woodstock was initiated through the efforts of Michael Lang, John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, and Artie Kornfeld. It was Roberts and Rosenman who had the finances. They placed the following advertisement in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal under the name of Challenge International, Ltd.: “Young men with unlimited capital looking for interesting, legitimate investment opportunities and business propositions.

comment Bystaffing agency @ Monday, July 26, 2010 10:02 AM
Lang and Kornfeld noticed the ad, and the four men got together originally to discuss a retreat-like recording studio in Woodstock, but the idea evolved into an outdoor music and arts festival, although even that was initially envisioned on a smaller scale, perhaps featuring some of the big name artists who lived in the Woodstock area (such as Bob Dylan and The Band). There were differences in approach among the four: Roberts was disciplined, and knew what was needed in order for the venture to succeed, while the laid-back Lang saw Woodstock as a new, relaxed way of bringing business people together.[4] There were further doubts over the venture, as Roberts wondered whether to consolidate his losses and pull the plug, or to continue pumping his own finances into the project

In April 1969, newly-minted superstars Creedence Clearwater Revival were the first act to sign a contract for the event, agreeing to play for $10,000. The promoters had experienced difficulty landing big-name groups prior to the Bay Area swamp rockers committing to play. Creedence drummer Doug Clifford later commented "Once Creedence signed, everyone else jumped in line and all the other big acts came on." Given their 3 a.m. start time and non-inclusion (at Creedence frontman John Fogerty's insistence) in the Woodstock film, Creedence members have expressed bitterness over their experiences at the famed festival.

comment Bybest dating @ Monday, July 26, 2010 10:07 AM
Woodstock was designed as a profit-making venture, aptly titled "Woodstock Ventures." It famously became a "free concert" only after it became obvious that the event was drawing hundreds of thousands more people than the organizers had prepared for. Tickets for the event cost US$18 in advance (equivalent to approx. US$105 in 2009 after adjusting for purchasing power, and US$75 after adjusting for inflation) and $24 at the gate for all three days. Ticket sales were limited to record stores in the greater New York City area, or by mail via a post office box at the Radio City Station Post Office located in Midtown Manhattan. Around 186,000 tickets were sold beforehand and organizers anticipated approximately 200,000 festival-goers would turn up.
