This review is of the Trotter's Tavern located at 119 N. Main St., Bowling Green, not the one located on Heatherdowns Boulevard in Toledo. I have never eaten at the Toledo location, but if the food is as good as the one in B.G., I'm there!
The Trotters in B.G. is rather cozy - really just a college pub with high-topped tables crowded alongside the bar. It is long on atmosphere, but short on space. For this reason, you might want to try it when it is not crowded. I like to go during B.G.S.U. semester breaks.
The menu is really unusual and includes such delicacies as Scotch Eggs. These are hard-boiled eggs wrapped in a coating which includes breadcrumbs and sausage. Tasty!
Most customers frequent the place for the Brown Jug Sirloin, which consists of a heavily marinated steak, served sizzling in a small skillet. I am normally a steak purist - I like the taste of steak itself and can't imagine trying to improve on it with a marinade. To me, marinades are a way of improving the taste of cheaper cuts of meat. Steak should stand on it’s own!
I have to admit, though, that I really love the Brown Jug Sirloin. There is something about how the juices of the steak intermingle with the hot, Worcestershire-heavy sauce that has me sopping up every savory drop with my dinner roll. I wouldn't want every steak like that, but for the occasional treat it is great!
To me, nothing compliments a steak like a tall, dark glass of Guinness draft. At Trotters, pouring a glass of Guinness becomes a work of art - literally! Before you take a sip, notice that the bar maid has delicately sculpted a perfect Shamrock in the foamy head as she poured it.
